Who is Rathmines.org?

We are a group of community members who aim to better our community by increasing community sharing information and creating a virtual community that compliments our actual community. This site is affectionately called Rascal by it creators. It stands as an acronym for Rathmines and Surrounding Communities Action Links. At present this site is authored by Steve Williams, proofed by Eric and Maureen Maronese; Bill MacArthur and Cynthia Hardie. I would like to thank these volunteers for their time and patience.

What is this site about?

Rathmines.org is a community site which offers a webspace, a discussion forum and information wiki.

  1. The website is a static site with links, some contextual and historical information and contact details. You are currently at the website as it has a dark blue background.
  2. The discussion forum is a space for the community to come together and post and reply conversations. Topics could include news, questions, events, opinions and community announcements. The Forum is light blue and white.
  3. Lastly we provide an information wiki. A wiki is also interactive, however it uses a database and stands as an information repository. Pages can be added about local services and businesses, community groups, special events, local history as well as regional programs news and events. The wiki is mostly white in colour.

Where is Rathmines.org?

The site is hosted and maintained by our supporters. The actual domain space is hosted by a local provider, Newcastle Infotech in Wallsend. Promotion and improvement of the site is further supported by the local families and businesses. Contact Rathmines.org if you can promote or support the forum through your organisation or business. This could be as simple as handing out fliers, displaying a poster or moderating our forum and/or wiki.

What can I use Rathmines.org for?

This website is free. Why? Because it should be.
  1. As an individual you can use the forum to discuss community matters and your interests with other locals. It could be a hobby, sporting interest, perhaps you want to improve the environment or just read the community news.
  2. If you are an organisation, business, community group or local family you can create and edit your own wiki page for other people to access. It's free and once you know how, very easy. The word wiki is Hawaiian for 'fast'. Just contact Steve if you need a little help on 0411 444 334.
  3. Keep up with the news and events of the community. By reading and contributing to the discussion in the forum and wiki, people can have an impact on improvements within our community.

When did Rathmines.org begin?

The site was developed as an online replacement of the long established Rathmines Progress Association which stood for the betterment of our local community. It was founded in 1945 and had its concluding meeting on the evening of June 23, 2009. At that meeting it was proposed by Steve Williams that a website be developed to continue in someway the charter of the Progress Association and to make it more accessible to families via a community website. As a result Rathmines.org was developed over the following two weeks and hosted live as of July 11th, 2009.

Why is Rathmines .org needed?

Communities , as we know are essential to our way of life. From the smallest villages to the largest cities every community has its own personality and gives off an aura or vibe that is unique just to that location, like its history and geography. If there was anything as certain as death and taxes it would be change. The Rathmines Progress Association has a long record of ensuring community consultation, supporting much needed improvements and has a library of knowledge about the history of our community. The Association has also on occasion taken a stand and rallied the residents against excessive development proposals which would radically impact on those who choose to live here because of the life style it provides. Rascal and it's co-operative of members would not be opposed to change but would act as a vehicle for mediating excessive development and ensuring Rathmines grows, but also retains its character.

Rathmines.org can never replace the Rathmines Progress Association and should not be seen as such. However that being said we aim to create the same forum where people can give opinion, contribute to discussion and discuss what makes Rathmines the place we love. Rathmines.org is a vessel in which we can navigate the waters of change together and progress forward for a better community.
